Heroic Food began with the idea of bringing together veterans, agriculture and sustainability to provide access to meaningful, independent careers for soldiers transitioning to civilian life. In 2012, founder Leora Barish discussed the idea of a farmer veteran training program with Michael O’Gorman, founder of the Farmer Veteran Coalition. FVC agreed to godfather the project, and Leora began consulting with farm experts, veterans and advocates, educators and farmland conservationists to bring together a program that would work for veterans.
In 2013, Heroic Food reached out to the Hawthorne Valley Farm Learning Center which runs beginning farmer education programs for the Hudson Valley. With the educational guidance and fiscal sponsorship of Hawthorne Valley, a dedicated team of advisors and the incredible generosity of the projects founding supporters, the Heroic Food Project was set to welcome its first cohort the Spring of 2015.
